How important are profile pictures on social websites?
I'm curious: do you think having a picture on your profile is important? What is the best kind of picture to have if you have one? Why does it matter to you when you look at someone else's profile?

It depends on your goal. As mine is to establish and maintain a personal brand and build relationships, a picture is an important part. It adds to the completeness of my profile. It is just a data point for most but showing it removes one uncertainty.
My picture and my recommendation is to use a good head shot in business casual dress. This is easy with a digital camera - anyone can do it. Remember, it is part of your personal brand and reputation.
When I look at a profile, I do look for a picture but not seeing one does not matter unless I'm going to a meeting. However, it does help me remember them so from that perspective it is useful. Again, it is just a data point but seeing it removes one uncertainty.

All social networks are not the same. Consider Myspace and LinkedIn. What similarity is there really?
So, it depends on the site. It depends on what you want to accomplish. There is no generic answer.

I think it reveals the real identity of a persons profile.

Let me try to answer all questions in one explanation. When you are blogging, posting / commenting at forums etc ...having a picture does not matter. A picture is something that is the first thing users eye for, when running through profiles on matrimony sites, film related sites. Also a corporate profile does require a picture to promote and make browsers remember them out of hell lot of companies. Naturally a profile at matrimony site requires a picture that attracts prospective bride / bridegroom. For corporate profile, no need to mention, it is their logo obviously.
Does it makes sense?

Profile pictures are very important as people identify using visual indicators so your profile picture should be consistant across sites as it's your personal brand that's being represented on your profile.
I agree with the fact that it comes down to objectives and what you use your profile for. For example you may want to use a logo or icon as a symblifier rather than a photo. This works well if it's a business you are looking to promote. Though on Linkedin they do not allow logos and I have never been able to understand this as after all we are on a business site and people want to communicate their business to others.
I hope this answer helps you.
