As from a "patent" point of view, the difference is obviousness. While a researcher can pass through a lot of documents and investigations (state of the art) without connecting them to find a solution to a given problem, the inventor does.
Since obviousness is more a appreciation condition rather than a perfectly applicable condition, in some cases researchers and inventors may have little o no differences.
Nowadays, considering the technology advance, it is less probable to find inventors that are not reserches or really engaged in the art of their invention.
