Has anyone had real success with twitter?? here are a few of my observations.

1 started using twitter maybe 3 months ago with 2 accounts and have 800 followers combined.

1. don't use a standard background, make it unique. use your logo and/ or background color etc.
2. what i do is search for terms similar to my niche and find people who are talking about those topics. i reply to them and then follow them.
3. if i blog about something, add a video, i also twitter about it.
4. i will at most only follow 200 people in one day. my account was banned temporarily when i first started because i went over. u can follow 200 or 10% of your followers. you can use tweepular.com to auto unfollow. you can use tweepular.com to auto follow as well but it will not be targeted followers.
5. if you are lazy to post everyday, u might be interested in http://twitterfeed.com/. it will automatically post tweets for you via a feed of your choice. so either find feeds or create your own. u can take your blog's feed and add it here. this way it will post your blogs automatically.
6. i started my first twitter account one month ahead of the other and my second twitter account is catching up in the amount of followers. my second twitter account deals with more entertaining and humorous content. so, you'll get more followers if you make your tweets entertaining and interesting.
7. if you just keep posting, it's not going to help gain followers. to be successful, you need to interact with other tweeters.

10 Top Business Tips for Africa Enterprenuers

I was working on something this morning from which I came up with this list of 10 tips. I thought it might be useful to share.

If you disagree with any please say so, or if you have some that you would like to add post away!

1) When you start a new business/ launch a new product, ask yourself :

"Are there enough potential customers ?"
"Do you have a method to communicate with those prospects?"
"Can you afford to Market to those prospects?"

If the answer is "no" to any of the questions think long and hard about continuing

2) Get out to market ASAP, learn from the early failed results and refine your product offering quickly. Most people spend too long planning and refining their product / service before showing it to the market. Best market research is to ask people if they would like to buy!

3) Write an 'instruction manual' for your business outlining each process, who should do it, and how. Deskilling the operation into a set of rules make your business easier to scale and makes holidays more relaxing.

4) Dream about the future regularly, picture your business in 6months, 1 year, 3 years What's it like? Staff? T.O.? Profit? Your Role?

5) Profile your customers and make sure that you understand why they buy your products / services.

6) Have a USP. Make sure you can answer "Why should I buy from you", in less than 30seconds.

7) Remember Profit is your friend. Learn to love it, forecast it and measure it. No matter what your business ambitions and morals are everything starts with making some profit.

8) Get to grip with Finances. Learn at least how to do a cashflow forecast, P& L and read an aged debtors report . Then commit 1 hour a month to updating them.

9) Be very careful about whose advice you take.Take advice from successful business people.

10) Get a mentor, or more than one. That’s not a coach or trainer but someone who you would like to emulate. Don’t pay them. Buy them lunch once a month and talk through your plans and problems. Use their experience to point you in the right direction and advise you what should be your big priorities.

African Leadership Academy to Award Five ‘Innovation Prizes’ to Honour Future African Leaders and the Communities Who Support Them

This “Nobel Prize for African Youth” Honours 14-18 Year Old Africans Who Have Solved a Pressing Community Problem; Award Includes a Scholarship to ALA, and in some cases Cash.

African Leadership Academy (ALA) today announced the launch of an exciting new initiative: the Africa Innovation Prize, The prize will be awarded to young African leaders between the ages of 14 and 18 who have created an innovative solution to a pressing problem in their community, have demonstrated passion for Africa, and who have academic promise. The award will also be used to honour the communities who encourage and support these young leaders. The prize will initially be given to the most promising, innovative young leaders in Ghana, South Africa, Nigeria, Angola and Zimbabwe, with the hope that it will become a pan-African prize in the future.

“Africa’s future rests in the hands of our young people. This prize honours those young Africans who are taking that future into their own hands, demonstrating the kind of leadership in their youth that gives us hope for Africa’s prosperous and peaceful future,” said Fred Swaniker, the Ghanaian Founder and CEO of African Leadership Academy. “Just as the Mohamed Ibrahim Prize or the Nobel Peace Prize honours mature leaders, this prize will discover and honour young leaders with similarly graoundbreaking impact at the very beginning of their leadership journey.”

Applicants will be judged on the impact and ingenuity of their solution to a pressing problem within an African community. Additionally, they must show a track record of academic promise and a demonstrated passion for Africa.

“One of the most important factors in creating successful leaders is the support of the people around them. So our goal is not only to encourage and honour young leaders themselves – but also to promote and honour the communities that nurtured these leaders,” Swaniker continued. “We know that without these supportive environments there are potential leaders whose innovative spirit may never grow.”

“We at ALA wanted to launch this prize to recognize and honour the immense power that young people have to change the world. Had this prize existed two years ago, the young leaders at ALA today would have been prime candidates to win the prize.” Said ALA Dean Christopher Khaemba.

The inital prizes will be made possible by sponsors in each country. Submissions will be vetted by a panel of judges from ALA and from business and government in-country. South Africa Virtual R1 Million Competition

"The 2009 JSE/Liberty Investment Challenge proved to be a great success, drawing an increased number of registration figures in comparison to the previous year. This growth serves as proof that the Investment Challenge is fulfilling its aim of increasing financial literacy among the South African youth therefore securing them a better future," says Senior General Manager of JSE Education, Maureen Dlamini.

For more than 35 years the JSE/Liberty Investment Challenge has been helping to educate school learners and university students about the ins and outs of investing in the stock market and the larger role that such investment plays in the country's economy with the idea of securing a better future for them. Thus it is the most focused and far-reaching educational youth programme in the South African financial sector.

The JSE/Liberty Investment Challenge runs from March to September and is open to all grade 8 to 12 learners from any South African high school. Students from universities and independent colleges are also eligible to participate. All school entrants must be in teams of four and have to be supervised by a teacher or mentor selected by schools. Investment Challenge Co-ordinators at the JSE will also provide assistance on a daily basis. Grade 12 learners will need permission of their principal to enter. University teams must consist of a minimum of two members and a maximum of four.

Howard Fox, Divisional Director of Marketing at Liberty says, "Liberty takes pride in partnering with the JSE for this initiative. The Investment Challenge is an excellent tool to encourage financial education in South Africa. It plays a beneficial role in preparing learners and students for long-term saving and wealth creation".

Entrants have a choice of selecting one or more risk portfolios that they wish to take part in for the competition. The portfolio options are Income (low risk), Equity Growth (moderate risk) and Speculator (high risk). Teams choose the portfolio according to their level of experience and risk adversity. High risk shares and other financial instruments can result in high returns over a short period of time but at the same time have a higher probability of the share price to suddenly drop. It is therefore recommended for learners in grade 8 and 9 to participate in the Income Portfolio game as this is more suited to beginners.

Throughout the Investment Challenge, the team with the best performance for the month in each portfolio will win R500 per team member. A further R500 will be awarded to their school as well as another R500 for their teacher or mentor. At the end of the competition, five prizes amounting to R60 000 per portfolio will be awarded to the overall winners of the Income, Equity Growth and Speculator Portfolios. In addition to winning amazing prizes, entrants will gain exposure and experience in life skills such as budgeting, research, team work and they will identify new career opportunities.

Each team will be required to pay a registration fee of R120 per team per portfolio entered for the school and R150 per team for the universities. Zain shortlisted in new GSMA Awards category

Zain Malawi has announced that its mother company Zain, has been shortlisted in the Global System for Mobile communications Association's (GSMA) new category for its annual GSMA awards. The winner for the award will be unveiled at the mobile communications event, the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on Tuesday, 16 February 2010.
The new category, Mobile Money for the Unbanked Service Award, is similar to one that Kenya's Safaricom won in 2009 for its M-pesa service but it has also been shortlisted in the new category.

Zain has been shortlisted for this award due to its newly launched mobile commerce service Zap.

The GSMA announced that the new award aims to recognise innovative mobile banking services around the world that are pioneering the roll out of low-cost financial services for people where traditional financial services are not within their reach or readily available.

According to the company, the award is aligned to the GSMA's Mobile Money for the Unbanked (MMU) initiative, which was created to connect the unconnected and improve the social, economic and environmental well-being of the world's population living on less than US$2 a day by supporting and encouraging the development of sustainable mobile money solutions.
